Fixed In Place

Fixed In Place
Mildmay Fane (1602-1666), "Of an Old Man" (a interpretation of Claudian, "Carmina Minora" 20, time off common as "The Old Man of Verona", from Fane's "Otia Sacra"):Happy is He who on his own fields expansion,

And no everyplace moreover, hath acted ore his Age;

He, whom his own save, (had it eyes and tongue)

Engine capacity say it sees Him old, and saw him unripe.

Now simple to a staff, he treads relatives sands

He previously had crept on with his hands:

So reckons up the ache track and (dotage

He ne'r was constant with fortunes Oversee to flash,

Nor did He sweet talk Forain springs with taste;

He was no Merchant-man vigor trepidation the Straits,

Nor Souldier fancying Warring baits;

He never Pleaded, neither inconvenience nor drop,

Of brabling Law-suits ever prepared him hoarse:

But (as uncapable of mission) free

Cannot wish what the nearby suburb requisite be,

Yet doth apply a anticipate (may controule

Nor casts He up the meeting by Consuls now,

But as the Fruit-trees to their seasons bow;

By Apples Autumn, In any case by Vegetation befalls him.

One descent hides "Phoebus"-face, the exceedingly recalls him:

And from this time This Countrey-swains observing way

Dealings within his Orb the Transmit of Day.

He did recall yon massive Oak, in the role of 't stood

But for a plantlet, so's grown old with's wood:

And judging that exceedingly Ile (with less wits blest

High-class Barbarism) to be th' Indies East:

He doth determine the Red-sea to be neer,

Beholding "Stranground", "Farcet", and the "Meer":

And yet for the period of strength unconquer'd he may shut up shop

Way, the third Age sees him Grandfather.

Let others amble to the farth'st of "Spain",

The way is onely Theirs, but life His acquire.The old man of Verona may never have possession of wandered far from his "secure Put up," but in this interpretation Fane places him in what is now Cambridgeshire (Stranground, i.e. Stanground, and Farcet).

I haven't read "Claudian's Old Man of Verona: An Crew of English Translations with a New Composition by Edwin Morgan, Style and Text" 2 (1993) 87-97, but for some other translations and the supporting Latin see:

* Put forward Was an Old Man of Verona (Abraham Cowley, Maurice Platnauer)

* Glowing the Man (Thomas Randolph)

* In Cities Never Seen (Henry Vaughan)
