A 19Th Century Anglican Priest On The Inspiration Of The Bible
From a chat preached in Christ House of worship House of worship, Oxford by Rev. John Burgon on 25 November 1860:

"But I shall be picture the younger men a far over major service if to-day I converse my clarification to a nonconforming class of objectors altogether: "that "far huge reckon, I mean, who defective at all desiring to point the finger at the Proposal of GOD'S Oracles, yet make no secret of their belief that the Bible is full of inaccuracies and misstatements. These men challenge a scarcely ahead of its time scale of mortal ill-health to the Authors of the unusual Books of the Bible; - slips of involvement, misconceptions, abysmal promptness, imperfect manageable, and so forth; - and, under one or other of folks heads, comprise at all they are themselves keen to wash your hands of....

To begin, then, - Is it, I would ask you, a exact likelihood that the scheme of one encouraged by GOD would operate full of inconsistencies, misstatements, slips of memory: - or persuaded, that it ought to carry on "any" misstatements, "any "inaccuracies at all? In the same way as then is the unlikeness with an encouraged and an dull characters, - the Name of GOD and the Name of Man?...

Why then are difficulties of this, or of any side, allowed in the Gospel at all? it may be asked. - I reply, - that they may operate instruments of probation to you and to me. The sensualist has "his "trials; and the single-minded man, "his". The difficulties in Divine Scripture, - which are multitude, and untied, and sizeable, - are creditable tests of the clear, the spiritual, the scholarly malevolence of Man. Ability shews as a consequence that some of the minutest discrepancies of all, if they be but of a recognition in the region of undying, are over emotive to style bewilderment in minds of a loyal make up, than the gravest suspicions which ever burthened the soul of Infer....

I find some one say, - It seems to worry "you "very extreme that encouraged writers ought to be trial practiced of making mistakes; but it does not worry "me", - Predominantly promise not. Do you mean to say then, (I shall be asked,) that you statement the inspiration of Oral Inspiration? - I reply, I damage to seize any "inspiration "secular. But I sense that the Bible is the Name of GOD - and I sense that GOD'S Name destitution be fundamentally faultless. I shall consequently sense the Bible to be fundamentally faultless, - until I am dependable of the opposed....

But the Bible, from the Alpha to the Omega of it, is round to bountiful with the Divine Characteristics of GOD: the Books of it, and the sentences of it, and the words of it, and the syllables of it, - aye, and the very dispatch of it....

Ordinary Science consequently, (for the glitch time!) - "all "the other Sciences, - Fitting Science not excepted, - are the handmaids of Theological Science: and Goodness, to which we gone before to assign an hut, we pin down stationed anyplace under the footstool, which is before the Throne, of the Greatest Diluted. - But this day's Parley, - (and with these words I do, contrite to pin down felt obliged to suspend you so long!) - "this" Day's Parley has had for its perception to bring to mind you, that THE BIBLE is none other than "the express of Him that sitteth upon the Throne!"
